- Our daughters, Natalie 37th birthday
- Went down to Sufrey
- Crazy truck standoff
Today I had a mission that we were going to get up early and go down to suffray and find a beach that we heard was a good snorkeling Beach with lots of fish. It was by a beach we have been to before but you had to walk somewhere to get to it.
It was very rainy today and I had to pick up a few things before we left. I got some rope and a saw for a project we have tomorrow at Darren's container.
The traffic was bad getting through Castries So it put us behind schedule. Then when we got to Ans le Ray They were doing road construction and had everybody stopped. We were there for some time. We almost decided to turn around and go back but then we thought we didn't have anything else to do today so we decided to keep going. It takes about an hour and a half to get there from Castries.
We were a little bit worried about the road because it's a dirt road and fairly Rocky. Last time we came here we had the truck so we didn't worry too much about it, but with the car we thought it may not be high enough to make the trip back in to where the beach was. Turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and we made it easily.
We found the beach but the ocean was a bit rough today because of the storm. I guess. We did do some snorkeling but didn't see too much.
On the way out the back road that took us to the beach has a real steep spot and it's on a turn. When we got there there was some shouting going on and I got out to go see what was going on. Turns out there was a big truck coming up the hill with a load of lumber and a van going down the hill and they met on that steep part where it is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass. It was so steep that the van could not back up and the big truck did not want to back down. The van driver was very upset and was yelling. I'm not sure who he was yelling at whether it was the other driver or what. But he should have gave way to the guy coming up the hill as it is hard for them to get going once they stop. When we came up it in our front-wheel drive car we were unsure with that. We were going to make it. Finally, a guy with a four-wheel drive pickup showed up and hooked on to the van and pulled it back up the hill so he could get out of the way. Then a four-wheel drive backhoe showed up and hooked onto the big truck with the load of lumber and pulled him up the hill. It was a little hairy as the big truck rolled back real hard before he could get the brake on again. I assume it was a manual shift and that's why he had a hard time getting going up the hill. So the backhoe got the rope tight and started backing up so the guy could get forward motion going. It's right on a cliff so the whole thing was a little hairy even just watching it and I for sure would not want to be driving the truck. Anyway, the backhoe was able to pull the truck up the hill to where he hit a level spot and could continue on. There were a lot of people who had gathered around during all of this and we're having quite the conversations about everything.
We were probably there a half hour to 45 minutes waiting for them to figure out how to get the van out of the way to get the truck the rest way up the hill. Once everybody was moved everybody seemed happy again in the way we went.
It was funny during the same time that they were stuck and cars were backing up both ways. All the workers from the beach resort we're coming down the road walking. I guess they walked to sufrey which is probably a mile or two. But there were probably 40 or 50 of them going home. It's always fun to chat with them and we had something interesting to talk about with the van in the truck.
Anyway, we made it home safely and then went to district Council meeting with the missionaries.
I must be getting used to being here on the island because I didn't stop and take a picture anywhere on this trip which is pretty unusual for me.
Elder Thomas from Hurricane Utah left the island to go to St. Vincent on Tuesday.
